Secondary Student Life
New Heights Christian Academy provides many opportunities for students to participate in various organizations and clubs that promote team building, character development, spiritual growth, good citizenship, leadership skills, school spirit and fun.
High School Opportunities
Math League - Designed to improve problem-solving skills, Math League provides opportunities for students to compete in monthly math competitions and be eligible to join Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society.
Speech & Debate - NHCA is a member of the National Speech and Debate Association. Many different events are offered at competitions around the state, ranging from comedy to dramatic to inspirational.
Scholar’s Bowl - A competitive team with a record of success, Scholar’s Bowl is an academic team competition in which participants respond to various questions in a variety of subjects. Scholar’s Bowl goal is to compete at the District, Sectional and State level.
Student Council - Comprised of an Executive Team and Class Officers, the Student Council plans and executes events, increasing school spirit. Student Council is responsible for the Back to School Bash, Sadie Hawkins, Homecoming, Winter Banquet, Appreciation Weeks, Thanksgiving Food Drive, plus service projects throughout the year. It is a great way to serve the school and classmates while developing leadership and teamwork skills.
National Honor Society - NHS is a nationally recognized organization that honors students who excel in academics, leadership, service, and character. Throughout the school year, NHS performs service activities for the school and the community including two blood drives, a food drive, Hero chapels, and more.
Tomorrow’s Leaders Today - TLT is a youth leadership program sponsored by the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation. Students come together with business and community leaders to identify and discuss community issues, leadership and career opportunities. TLT provides students with an opportunity to learn more about the area and the importance of community service.
Spiritual Life Committee - Participants in the Spiritual Life Committee have an opportunity to serve Christ by planning and developing chapel services. Weekly chapels consist of student-led worship followed by a biblical message by local pastors, speakers or faculty. The major event for the year is to plan and set up Spiritual Emphasis Week, which is held every fall. The committee also leads the See You At The Pole event.
Middle School Opportunities
New Heights Junior Honor Society - NHJHS serves to honor 7th-9th grade students who demonstrate excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. NHJHS performs service activities such as the Life Water Well Collection, Elementary Reading Night and more.
Scholar’s Bowl - Acquiring an awesome record of winning, Middle School Scholar’s Bowl is a fun, social activity for students who desire to participate in local academic competitions. Scholar’s Bowl consists of a 6th grade team and a varsity and junior varsity team made up of 7th and 8th graders.
Student Council - The Middle School Student Body is led by elected officers from the 7th and 8th grade class. Student Government consists of elected class officers from 6th-8th grades who are responsible for planning social activities such as the Back to School Bash, End-of-Semester parties, and sports tournaments. Student Council officers also plan and implement service projects throughout the year.
6th Grade Spelling Bee - The annual School Spelling Bee helps to promote literacy by giving students a positive goal to work toward, allowing them to compete in a supportive environment. Winners have the opportunity to compete at the local Joplin Globe Regional Spelling Bee.
Geography Bee - Fourth through eighth grade students compete in the annual GeoBee designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. The individual school winner is eligible to compete at the State level and advance to the National level.
End of the Year Trip - Middle School students enjoy enticing and educational experiences as part of the Middle School History Class “Summer School Trip.” Students have toured Quebec City, Montreal, and Ottawa, Canada, Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., and Philadelphia.
