Elementary Student Life
New Heights Christian Academy provides many opportunities for elementary students to participate in school and local area events to promote team building, character development, spiritual growth, good citizenship, leadership skills, school spirit and fun.
Educational Field Trips – P3-5th grade offers a wide range of opportunities to go on one or two educational field trips throughout the year. They provide hands-on experience that enhances their learning outside the classroom. Area cave exploring, nature trails, historical monuments, marine life, zoos, pumpkin patches and corn mazes to name a few.
Elementary Art - Kindergarten through 6th grade have the opportunity to display their artwork at the District 9 Annual Art Show at Spiva Art Gallery at Missouri Southern State University. In the spring, all students in 1st through 5th grades take part in the NHCA Annual Art Fair competition where different creative projects are displayed in the school hallways for parents, grandparents and the student body to enjoy.
Elementary Athletics - Beginning in 3rd grade, NHCA offers our elementary students opportunities to participate in leagues in the surrounding area including basketball, cross country, soccer, and volleyball. In 5th grade, students can begin participating in track.
Elementary Choir - Beginning in 1st Grade, students have the opportunity to participate in choir to sing music and learn musical basics. Students perform at various school events, and carol to local nursing homes as a local mission. Students will grow in musicality, and they will develop a love for singing.
Cougar Run/5K – This is an annual spring event sponsored by our booster club to raise funds for our athletic programs.
Cougar Carnival – The elementary students look forward to this annual fall event. All money raised goes directly to the teachers to help aid in classroom needs, class field trips, etc.
Spelling Bee - 4th-5th grade students participate in an annual school spelling bee in the spring. The school winner will advance to the Joplin Globe area spelling bee where participants receive a small trophy and certificate. Large trophies and cash prizes are awarded to students who place 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. While spelling is certainly the focus, the bee teaches important lessons in courage and confidence, too!
Geography Bee –Fourth through eighth grade students compete in the annual GeoBee designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. The individual school winner is eligible to compete at the State level and advance to the National level.
Grandparents Day –NHCA has an annual Grandparents Day in the spring to give elementary students the opportunity to share their school experience with their Grandparents. It’s a fun filled morning with an all-school chapel in the Worship Center, artwork displayed in the hallways, and a special visit to the classrooms to meet teachers.
Community Service Opportunities – The students have several opportunities throughout their elementary years to serve the community, including visiting area nursing homes, supporting local ministries such as Choices and Watered Gardens, participating in area service projects during the annual mission week and donating food items for the annual NHCA Thanksgiving food drive.
